"As the White Crane Flies" by 12000 Miles (Electronic Artist from The United Kingdom)

"As the White Crane Flies" by 12000 Miles (UK/NZ electronica artist collaboration) Intriguing the listener with experimental Electronica, 12000 Miles releases their debut album, titled "As the White Crane Flies." The musical pair began this collaboration, as their group name suggests, miles apart sharing their works of MIDI files through the internet. The end result is an outstanding and brilliant collection of free forming works utilizing the highly talented forte of Lain Dixon Iain as flute player. Opening up the disc is "Alphabet Hunt (from A)," which delivers a driving industrial tonality, while the smooth and interesting flute surprises the listener with instrumental interplay. Strong and powerful synth hits and generous percussive beats bring together the absorbing energy "Endangered Species" offers up. "V Formation" shows a slightly softer side of the album, with the flute being soothing and melodic with a light and airy quality. If you like multi-layered experimental music with first-rate production that is flavored with the dynamics of the flute, then 12000 Miles's "As the White Crane Flies" will be one album you will thoroughly enjoy.

"Movement" by Earthsound (Jazz Artist from Boston, Massachusetts(MA))

Primarily a traditional, straight-up jazz outfit, the multi-cultural Earthsound ensemble combine Duke Ellington's rich sense of melody and Charles Mingus' sophisticated exploration on their accomplished debut jazz and fusion CD, "Movement." Citing such influences as Ellington, Jobim, and Paul Winter, the quartet's (piano, bass, flute, and percussion) border-less compositions range from piano-led meditations that recall Bill Evans to flute-dominated improvisations reminiscent of masters like Yusef Lateef and Herbie Mann. Leader and bassist, Jason Davis, much like fellow bass-playing bandleader Mingus, works in tandem with his Peruvian percussionist, Jorge Perez-Albela, to provide the perfect framework for Brazilian flautist, Fernando Brandão's flights of gravity-defying lyricism, even as pianist, Nando Michelin of Uruguay, fills the middle with chords as rich as they are light and dexterous. And like Mingus' groundbreaking opus, "Cumbia & Jazz Fusion," with its replication of nature sounds, Davis ably employs real nature samples less as affect than as an organic supplementation of the band's interplay. "Movement," Earthsound's excellent debut CD, is a terrific introduction for a jazz combo of real talent and vision.

"Sparks in the Sky" by Steve Pedvin (Rock Artist from Illinois(IL))

Singer/songwriter Steve Pedvin's engaging style of guitar driven pop/rock is on full display on his excellent CD, "Sparks in the Sky." Often recalling the fertile talents of Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and particularly his classic "Brothers in Arms" LP, "Sparks in the Sky" 13 tuneful tracks run the gamut of potent rockers such as "Alive," to solemn ballads like "When Lightning Strikes," to feet-tapping swing on "Stuck in a Hole," all the while effected with the know-how and sly humor, of a performer of impeccable artistry. As a guitarist, Pedvin's tone and phrasing are spot on, whether invoking the spirit of Jimi Hendrix on "Nowhere to Go" or providing an acoustic picking-style backing on the solid, folk-like number, "Thirty Five." As a vocalist, he displays a range of tone and inflection that serve the song first and foremost and, as a writer, Pedvin's songs are as original as they are musically satisfying, reminding us all over again why rock 'n'roll remains a vibrant and important art form, even as it nears the end of its sixth decade. Steve Pedvin's aptly-titled "Sparks in the Sky" CD is a vision of musical sparks that illuminates the sky.

"In the Garden" by PJ22 (Electronic Artist from Switzerland)

PJ22's new CD, "In the Garden," a 1-man-at-the-keyboards exploration of instrumental Electronica, finds the Breakbeat / Breaks veteran and former punk musician, expertly blazing a trail of propulsive and pulsating dance / techno music every bit as danceable as it is catchy. The 11 track CD, at times reminiscent of The Chemical Brothers or The Crystal Method, trips between ambient canvasses on "The Old State," riveting techno "Another Day," and sinister, Gothic like soundscapes "Dark Side" with equal skill, leaving behind a positively breathless blend of Electro music that explodes with sure and steady indulgence. Elsewhere recalling such club stalwarts as Daft Punk or Orbital, PJ22's command of melody and rhythm lend an urgency that pays off big-time on "Breacking Glass" and the title song, "In the Garden." As ready for the dance floor or providing a soundtrack to a night of introspective reflection, PJ22's compelling and seamless Techno and Electronica CD, "In the Garden," will inspire the feet as well as the ears.

"The Emergent Sea" by Roman Rhodes and the Born Again Pagans (Folk Artist from Japan)

It's no wonder that Roman Rhodes and the Born Again Pagans' fine CD is titled "The Emergent Sea." Of its 16 folk / jazz / pop-rock hybrid songs, 8 pieces refer to the ocean - directly or by inference, in their titles. More interesting, is that for this accomplished, multi-cultural band, the predominant sound the unique synthesis of such musical styles evokes is altogether that of California coastline vistas on warm summer nights. Built on light, breezy, and melodic contemporary folk-rock along the lines of Jack Johnson (but incorporating flourishes of late '60's / early '70's pop-rock and jazz styles as well), Roman and his Pagans deliver spirited and decidedly spiritual, tunes that celebrate life and nature with a keen inventiveness, both musically and lyrically. The opening (title) track, "The Emergent Sea," with its free-flight flute backing and tasteful guitar interpolations, sets the tone for the disc, while other highlights incorporate judicious horns as heard on "Odysseus," syncopated rhythms on "A Man Once Called Me," Youngbloods like guitar fills on "Long Talk Off a Short Beer," and even some good-old down-home reminiscing on "Grandma's Telecaster (The Good Old Days.)" "The Emergent Sea" offers an excellent showcase for the skills and influences of players with origins that stretch from Scotland to Japan and sundry points in between, but what ultimately makes Roman Rhodes and the Born Again Pagans' CD so effective is the cohesive, well balanced, and accessible music at its core.

"Friction" by Pitchblack-ltd (Pop/Reggae Artist from Sweden)

Sweden's Pitchblack-ltd serves up their own vibrant take on dance-oriented rock on their terrific album, "Friction". Unlike some recently successful bands of this genre, the success of Pitchblack-ltd's new release is due more to an age-old reliance on brilliant song craft rather than mere adherence to the revival of the once unholy alliance between Rock and Disco. Indeed, each of the eleven songs on "Friction" bristles with its own immediacy, tunefully melding R&B and Rock influences with equal command. The first track, "Trouble Skank," establishes their unique sound with an insistent groove and sing-along melody. Elsewhere, "Everybodys Monkey" and "No Riot!?" employ the same measures of dance-floor urgency plus garage band vocal inflections, while the more relaxed "The Late Mans Blues," and the jazzy atmosphere of "Rumours," are testament to the band's adeptness with a broader – yet entirely cohesive, musical vision. Pitchblack-ltd's second CD "Friction" is an outstanding collection of razor-sharp songs executed with precision and muscle, regardless of style or influences.

"Change Up" by Lefty Blues Band (Blues/Country Artist from Florida (FL))

Lefty Blues Band, a Florida-based outfit steeped in R&B and roots-based Americana, conjures less the Sunshine State than dark swamplands and backwoods roadhouses on their fine debut album, "Change Up." Led by brothers John & Greg Bell, this 6-piece band is as equally adept with a deep South blues ("All For You") as a George Jones-inspired ballad ("Slow Love Song"), but for the most part carves out a classic rock sound that hovers between John Hiatt & Dire Straits; that is, displaying the former's all-inclusive grasp of Americana, while reflecting the latter's ability to fashion something completely new from tried and true forms. Highlights include the above mentioned "All For You," with its atmospheric Hammond organ and Gospel-like female chorus, as well as the moving "The Rush," a perfect hybrid of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger piano balladry. But in truth, there are no weak songs among these 10 original performances. Lefty Blues Band's new release "Change Up" is a terrific representation of Americana rock that embraces its roots, and fans of Leonard Cohen and Mark Knopfler will definitely enjoy it.

"Butter On My Roll" by Sheba the Mississippi Queen (Blues/Jazz Artist from Florida (FL))

Virtually born to sing, Sheba the Mississippi Queen, aka Martha Booker, inherits a proud legacy of female blues belters, adding her own resonant chapter to the story with her wonderful, uptown-style album, "Butter On My Roll." Built solidly on a foundation of the blues and Southern R&B, and utilizing a stellar band that includes a truly galvanizing horn section, Sheba the Mississippi Queen refuses to be constrained on this 13-song collection, sprinkling pure jazz ("Can't Help Lovin My Man"), Southern Soul ("Tell Me Why"), and Funk ("Hay Girlfriend"), and even some classic balladry ("Don't Say Goodbye"), into the potent mix. But let there be no doubt that Sheba the Mississippi Queen is first and foremost a master blues singer, and on mid-tempo numbers, like the Bessie Smith-infused title track, "Butter on My Rolls," or on foot-stompers like "Dance Jump Shout" and "Oh So Good," the singer proves herself more than worthy to join the ranks of successor to the recently departed Queen of Blues, Koko Taylor. Sheba the Mississippi Queen's "Butter On My Roll" will stand as a first-rate addition to listeners' collection of outstanding Blues albums.

"Green Evolution" by Sudama Mark Kennedy (Pop/Rock Artist from California (CA))

Opening Sudama Mark Kennedy's new CD, titled "Green Evolution," is a relaxed, Brazilian-style slice of vocal jazz, "Your Heart Just Knows," serving notice that his Adult Contemporary-oriented and deeply spiritual music is as eclectic as it is accomplished. A guitarist and multi-instrumentalist as tasteful as he is skilled, Kennedy's laid-back style works to perfection whether exploring Indian melodies ("Mystical Envelopment"), mining James Taylor-like easy listening ("Hum Alla Allelujah"), or even creating improvised, ambient New Age soundscapes ("Healing Zither"). A soothing and tuneful singer himself, Kennedy's inventive use of female vocals to counter melodies, or flesh out the harmonics of otherwise spare arrangements, adds yet another dimension to this album's California polish. "Curandero "Aras"" by Miguel Espinoza and Ty Burhoe (World/Jazz Artist from Colorado(CO))

Brilliant and amazing is just a start to describe the latest released album "Curandero "Aras," by the highly talented artists Miguel Espinoza and Ty Burhoe, aka Curandero. This six-track disc covers the style of Flamenco embedded with jazz fusion and offers some delightfully interesting and stunning pieces. Incorporating the unique blend of Flamenco guitar, tabla, banjo, and bass the sound textures this group creates is truly fabulous. "Segue" is jazz fire and fury at its best with funky bass lines, driving drum beats, and excellent guitar. Taking the mood to a more serene ambiance, "River" gently flows with a calmness of peaceful tranquility. "Once Upon a Time," features the banjo as the main instrument with an exceptional display of finger picking. Fans of jazz fusion and Flamenco won't be disappointed when listening to Curandero's "Aras," with its creative and distinctive charm of the well-focused and talented cast of musicians.

"Soarce Mother Earth" by The Soarce (Hard Rock Artist from Texas(TX))

Hailing from Texas, The Soarce's stellar debut album, titled "Soarce Mother Earth," taps into the vein of late 60s or early 70s classic & progressive hard rock, as promulgated by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Cream, & Led Zeppelin with the kind of polish & precision that separates the contenders from the pretenders. With blazing, shock-and-awe guitar skills, propulsive and climactic percussion runs, and inflamed, Jim Morrison-like vocal howls capable of raising the dead, The Soarce displays a mastery of their craft befitting their influences. Containing just 4 songs, but over twenty minutes in length, "Soarce Mother Earth" never lets up its sonic charge, closing out with a 7+ minute Hendrix-worthy opus ("Evening Sun") that's redolent with the master's flair for phrasing, tone, and sheer technique. The insatiable appetite for passionate Zeppelin-influenced hard rock is fulfilled by the kind of dramatics & nuance that The Soarce brings to the music scene with "Soarce Mother Earth," and fans of hard rock will definitely enjoy this album.

"Nightlife; A Pop-Opera in Three Acts" by Navarro and Stamps (Pop Artist from Texas(TX))

Navarro and Stamps' intriguing album, "Nightlife: A Pop-Opera in Three Acts," with its random and all-too-real sound bites of desultory social intercourse interwoven between and within the framework of its 23 tracks, finds the musicians delving into the dullness of everyday life with sounds & structures that belie the banality of the "night of serious drinking" this album entails. Navarro & Stamps' vocal & instrumental pieces rely on electronic keyboards and sound effects to explore and delineate the moods and states of mind evoked in the erstwhile narrative. Musically, the soundscape ranges from the cartoon-like "Everything is Now," to the no-frills electro-pop "Life is Taking for F--king Ever," to the enigmatically dissonant "Reprise & Postlude," recalling artists as varied and diverse as They Might be Giants and Tom Waits. Taken as a whole, Navarro & Stamps' "Nightlife: A Pop-Opera In Three Acts" is both a provocative and satisfying piece of work that demands, and, more importantly, rewards multiple listens.

"The Jungle or the Stars" by Ballistic Edna (Rock Artist from Illinois(IL))

Returning with "The Jungle or the Stars," an 11-song collection of smart and catchy, guitar-driven alternative pop/rock, the Chicago-based quartet, Ballistic Edna, delivers another CD that succeeds as both a follow-up and as a stand-alone album. "What Was That" opens the album with a power-chord manifesto that features a big, Bangles-like chorus as their two female singers blend voices with an ease that's extremely precise. Also recalling The Bangles, "Hallowed Ground" is a terrific rocker with a dead-on hook, while "Woman" thunders like a long-lost Heart out-take. Elsewhere, "Soulseeker" finds the band playing with Middle Eastern modalities without losing their fundamental rock ethos; experimentation not unlike the early-period of the group REM. Album closer, "Camera" in fact, takes the experimentation a step further, as the band explores an ambient mood that perhaps, suggests a new direction for the band. Kick back and enjoy their new CD, "The Jungle or the Stars" for straight-up, uncomplicated – Heartland-style Rock, as Ballistic Edna delivers the goods.

"Almost Got Reel" by Douglas Coleman (Classic Rock Artist from New Hampshire(NH))

Inspired by classic '70's Soft Rock stylings, singer-songwriter Douglas Coleman captures the spirit of the times on his excellent CD, "Almost Got Reel." Channeling the sounds of Gerry Rafferty, Al Stewart, and Chris Rea (among others), Coleman avoids all the pitfalls of the genre (i.e., sappy, cloying) with his original mid and up-tempo piano-led pop songs. CD-opener and title track, "Almost Got Reel," nails it with its minor key melody and a moody after-midnight ambiance that recalls the spirit of "Baker Street," but with its own unique and original flair. "Almost Got Reel" is also reprised in a terrific acoustic guitar-backed version at the end of the disc. Elegant, similarly '70's-influenced harmonies help set the tone on other album highlights as well, with "Blue Anime Eyes," "Night in Montreal," and the power ballad-like, "Gone More Slow," finding Coleman at his most tuneful and engaging best. These days Soft Rock is better known as Adult Contemporary, but the strength of Coleman's music is that he hasn't forgotten the Rock: although there are no screaming guitar solos or over-the-top production flourishes, nonetheless the vibe on "Almost Got Reel" is hardly laid-back. Like the above-named singers best works, Douglas Coleman's "Almost Got Reel" CD strikes a smart balance between folk and pop melodies on this timeless collection of well-crafted and well-executed songs.

"Skeptical Optimism" by Rick Wicker (Acoustic Rock Artist from Colorado(CO))

Rick Wicker's bio tells the story of a veteran singer-songwriter who refuses to give up on his passion for music; a sense of purpose that has formed his entire life. Not surprisingly, the title of his CD, "Skeptical Optimism," reflects a wary caution that just may relate to where his music is intended or is hoped, to take him, knowing all the while that what really matters is the journey itself. And this particular journey is by no means unrewarding. Recording at home, Wicker, a gifted guitarist and a singer/songwriter of considerable skill, delivers country-rock reminiscent of Loggins & Messina as heard on "Hurrien Nowhere" or Pure Prairie League heard on "Youniverse," and stretches out on a hook-laden rocker with muscular guitar proficiency on "Hell's Gate." The last of the 4 tracks, "Space Age Kids" blends Byrds-like folk-rock and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young harmonies to perfection, investing the song with the kind of classic but timeless, urgency that continues to make rock and its variant styles both satisfying and vital. Above all, Rick Wicker's "Skeptical Optimism" is an original and compelling work that recalls '70's country-rock influences without copying them and it's an excellent 4-song release that deserves no less than out and out optimism.

"Christ VS Krishna" by Christ VS Krishna (Rock Artist from Ontario, Canada)

Whether building off a Velvet Underground with Strokes-style riff or plying a decidedly UK-influenced pop-rock sensibility and even experimenting with electronica dance grooves, the 5 songs and self-titled CD, "Christ VS Krishna" proves it has original and substantial musicality. Toronto based Pank Bagga is the singer/songwriter behind the moniker, and his unique sound succeeds not in spite of these different influences but, rather, because he blends them so seamlessly. So, while CD-opener, "Hollywood Torpedo" is raggedly insistent like the best of Strokes songs, and "Lemonade" features the kind of instantly hummable hook worthy of The Cure, neither detracts from the other-worldly dance rhythms of the synth-driven "Sub-crack Waves." The other 2 tracks, "At the End" and "Demons in the Church" lean more to the VU / Strokes influence, particularly in their effortless rhythms and irresistible melodies, but each is stamped with Christ VS Krishna's utterly original vision. As debuts go, Christ VS Krishna's self-titled CD is a memorable and provocative outing that delivers much, but promises even more.

"Touch Me" by Vaughn Hemingway (Pop Artist from Missouri(Mo))

Vaughn Hemingway's compelling debut CD, "Touch Me," finds the singer-songwriter experimenting with form and delivery in a provocative 9-song collection that is just elusive enough to defy easy description, but more than potent enough to command deeper scrutiny. Shifting between straight synth-drenched pop "Touch Me," to lo-fi expressionism "Emma," to sprawling, multi-dimensional scores "I Want To Be Your Angel," and "Jerrylin," Hemingway's mainly synthesizer, guitar, and drums backing makes for a stylized, indie map of his musical explorations. The intensity and characteristic quality of Hemingway's performances and unique vocals transcend mere considerations of production or audience formatting. For instance, "Bring Them Home," is a solemn piano-based tune that feels like nothing that came before it, and yet it does not feel out of place on an album bereft of artificial boundaries. The CD "Touch Me" by Vaughn Hemingway will find ready ears with music lovers who appreciate an artist's vision and individualism.

"Lele Lele" by Lele Lele (World Artist from Sweden)

The self-titled collection by Lele Lele is an upbeat, energetic, and diverse collection of world tunes. Utilizing the heavenly sounds of the acoustic guitar and many native instruments, Lele Lele devises fluid, free-spirited tunes that are sure to leave lasting impressions. "En Magisk Hatt" starts things off right, wasting no time in acquainting listeners to the wide array of traditional instruments Lele Lele strategically orchestrates, as well as the vibrant and unique vocal performances. Taking on Middle-Eastern flair, "Zima" carries on the danceable mood of the CD while displaying some very memorable musical hooks. Furthermore, "Cogs & Gears" slows down the pace a bit while revealing a more emotional appeal to listeners. Superb production tops this assembly off, making it a prime choice for fans of world compositions.

"Love Revue" by Love Revue (Pop Artist from United Kingdom)

Smart and catchy pop/rock with decidedly Power Pop leanings is the order of the day on the very fine new self-titled CD from Love Revue. Boasting a post-Beatles-inspired sense of melody and pop precision, Love Revue's irresistible hooks have an altogether classic feel despite the contemporary production values that make this 11-song collection a natural for multiple radio formats. CD opener, "Cooking for One," a low-key gem built on a piano and acoustic guitar backing, sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the disc as it recalls the charms of Badfinger at that classic band's best. "Looking for the One" and "Soothe My Soul" more than ably demonstrate Love Revue's rocking side, while "Strip Me" and "Release" is love ballads of the first order. With the triumphant song "Get Along," Love Revue really proves its mettle with a spirited ELO-influenced creation tailor-made for summer radio and summer fun. Love Revue's CD impresses as an album that succeeds on its own merits: a collection of pure pop songs that will sound as good on the car radio as they will at home.

"The Grace of God" by Paul T. (World Artist from Tennessee(TN))

"The Grace of God" by Paul T. puts a new and palatable spin on spiritual music. Paul's smooth timbre creates vocal performances that leave lasting emotional impressions. The riveting "Don't Listen" takes on the sounds of more conventional contemporary Christian music, consummated by heavenly female chorus background vocals. "Come On" is representative of the overall upbeat, energetic vibe of the record. Moreover, "Woza[come]" takes on a very soulful edge, and illuminates Paul's ability to craft poignant poetic lyrics. "Flesh & Bone" by Steve Pack (Country Artist from Texas(TX))

With an ear for a great melody and the storyteller's insight for spinning a compelling yarn, Austin-based Steve Pack puts both and more, on display with his fine debut CD, "Flesh & Bone." Like fellow Texas troubadours Steve Earle or Robert Earl Keen, Pack's work is based in country-rock but, truly, his songs transcend such narrow definition. Tunes like "Baby Hold On" and the rocking title track, "Flesh & Bone," feature catchy, radio-ready choruses that would be at home on multiple radio formats; "Bowman Ridge" a song about Pack's Texas roots, employs delicate cello interludes that defy simple categorization while the opening number, "Like a Dylan," is reminiscent of master songwriter Tom Petty's mid-'80s output, with its balanced, guitar-led fire. Pack's sure sense of purpose is elsewhere aided by a keen attention to detail, reflected in his band's sparkling accompaniment and the evocative arrangements that render the album both contemporary and timeless in scope. "Flesh & Bone" ably describes the organic and deep-rooted spirit of Steve Pack's debut CD, but it's the Texas blood in this terrific CD that will make its mark with listeners.

"Six Songs" by Orange Democracy (Folk Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

"Six Songs" the aptly titled debut release by Orange Democracy, is in fact, exactly that: a 6-song CD but it really is far, far more. With an experimental, if not avant garde, approach to compositions and arrangements that, by turns, incorporate influences ranging from jazz, to classical, to choral music and more. This NY-based quartet's album is a virtual tapestry of its component parts. Classically trained pianist Cyrus von Hochstetter's nimble and inventive chording sets the pace with tuneful and complex jazz/easy listening pieces, upon which the evocative sax of Samir Zarif, and the jazz phrasing of guitarist Ted Boasso, add unpredictable but tasteful embellishment. Carla Jablonski, a seasoned and multi-dimensional vocalist, adds a second voice in spots, maintaining the same standards of musical exploration in harmonies that add yet another, almost grounding aspect to the richly diverse set of songs. "Bitter Rain," with its melancholy sax and worthy harmonies, is a particular highlight, but the subversive "High Heels To Hell" and melancholy "In Remembrance" is no less compelling. The excellent CD, "Six Songs" entails proficient musicality and collectively displays a uniquely sophisticated mix of modernistic songs.

"Better Than Ever" by IYAM (Rock Artist from Texas(TX))

Released for '09, IYAM's "Better Than Ever" CD, a collection of Classic Rock with Heavy Metal theatrics, sounds as fresh and relevant as ever. Since the likes of Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath popularized grandiose, anthem like Hard Rock virtues back in the day, many other sub-genres of Rock have come and gone, but Hard Rock and Metal's appeal has never waned. IYAM prove themselves accomplished purveyors in their own right, displaying said virtues on an album that hits all the right marks: songs built on riffs of unstoppable force, slashing lead guitar work worthy of Randy Rhodes, well-crafted and exemplary lyrics that get to the heart of what Metal is all about; and a singer with the rage, fire, and immediacy to bring it all home. Highlights include "Witches And Warlocks," built on a thundering blues riff, CD-opener "All Is Well," a rocker with soaring hooks, and "Going Through The Motions," with its Gothic atmosphere. IYAM's "Better Than Ever" CD is, simply, well-executed and powerful classic hard rock.

"Wild" by Making a Monster (Rock Artist from British Columbia, Canada)

With a unique approach to their alternative / modern rock leanings, Making a Monster's solid debut CD, "Wild," actually recalls an otherwise unexpected influential '90's album as a source of comparison. Even though "Wild" contains plenty of outright full-rock attack - with a decidedly Grunge bent, Making a Monster's sound, sometimes restrained and sometimes crash and burn sonic assault, reminds one of no less an historical document than Nirvana's "Unplugged" album. Like it, "Wild" is redolent with the aura of loose ends and jagged edges, of introspective pleas and scathing fury, and of finely wrought songs that can be both engaging and corrosive. For instance, "Blister" comes across like a straight-on Nirvana tribute, particularly with its discordant, vertigo-inducing guitar fills while the soft ballad "Light," built on a simple acoustic guitar backing, demonstrates leader Scott Auriat's keen melodic sense. Elsewhere, "Wild" bounces between sonic rage as heard on "To Be Young" and pure-pop sensibilities heard on "The Long Road," a split surely reflecting a restless need to explore the ranges and depths of their art. "Wave It In" by Red Directors (Pop Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

If you like pop/rock with bigger-than-life hooks and sing-along choruses that stick with you long after the last note has drifted off into the night then, Red Directors, delivers the goods on their latest CD, "Wave It In," a ten song collection of highly polished power pop gems. "After Sunday" kicks things off with its infectious, era-spanning sense of melody and drive. It's only one of several highlights though. "Been Around" and "Pretty Good Odds" demonstrate the band's ballads are no less formidable than their best rockers, despite such defining up tempo performances as "Naked in the Kitchen" and "Woken Eye." Elsewhere, they more than ably show they can cover that middle ground between rocker and ballad too, offering up the terrific "Spin" and the endearing "Amazing," each with the same post-Beatles flourish that infuses the entire CD. With such a solid multi-format, pop/rock approach to their sound the "Wave It In" CD by Red Directors is sure to please across generation lines, a tribute to their talent as well as their influences.

"It's Time" by Lisa Hugo (Jazz Artist from United Arab Emirates)

In the tradition of such venerable performers as Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy, Lisa Hugo straddles the boundaries of jazz and pop with equal ease and finesse on her fine new CD, "It's Time." With her supple, three octave vocal range and the instincts of a seasoned vet, the Australian born and world-traveled, pianist and singer/songwriter simply delights on this 11-song collection of pop, jazz, and easy listening songs. Backed by a small combo with exemplary taste and feel, Hugo's piano sets the tone on jazzier numbers like the CD opener, "With You I Can Be Me" and "Oh My Baby," while the subdued, "Please Try to Understand," finds Hugo delivering an emotion-laden confessional with only the leanest of guitar, bass, and sprinkling of cymbals. Although very comfortable and adept with the jazz-pop style, the real highlight of the set is "Butterfly," a wonderfully melodic pop tune as engaging as it is uplifting. Lisa Hugo's bio is one filled with musical accomplishment all across the globe, but her new CD stands on its own merits. Fans of adult-oriented, tuneful jazz-pop will thoroughly enjoy the perfect blend of polished and sophisticated easy listening music on "It's Time."

"Lempi" by Tunto (Jazz Artist from Finland)

Mixing jazz and world-infused explorations of melody and harmony with beats and soundscapes from the electronica school, Tunto's "Lempi" CD is a boldly inventive map into a musical world without borders. With titles that signify many moods such as, "Caressing Music," "Itch Music," or "Yearning Music," Tunto aspires to reveal his imagination is more than up to the task of translating and transposing, raw emotion into music form, a subjective aesthetic that demands no small amount of receptivity and reciprocation from his listeners. Tunto pulls it off quite effectively and this has much to do with the range of textures, vocals and instrumentals, he throws into the mix as well as the musical symbolism his melodies conjure. Tunto's provocative third CD, "Lempi," is an informed rendering of a brave new world of music's breadth and elasticity; an album for jazz, world music, and experimental electronica enthusiasts.

"Oceans & Islands" by Dave Spinner (Jazz Artist from New York(NY))

Whether it is a lush contemporary jazz setting or a vocal tune that could've come right out of the classic Brazilian songbook, Dave Spinner takes the listener on an eye-opening trip through various jazz forms on his fine debut CD, "Oceans & Islands." Whatever the style, Spinner proves he's more than adept at navigating jazz' many tributaries on this 7-track collection. Beginning with "Bouncin'," Spinner kicks things off with a radio-ready R&B influenced contemporary jazz tune, followed by "Dinji", a sun-drenched take on Brazilian vocal jazz. But before the album gets too laid-back, Spinner shifts gears with "Lobster Montuno," a spirited and rhythmically complex Latin jazz jam, featuring a Caribbean horn arrangement as authentic as it is assured. Elsewhere, Spinner's keyboard mastery comes to the forefront with exploring and dynamic solos that breathe new life into the traditional piano-trio style "Sweet & Lovely," or raises the roof, as on the swinging Hammond organ workout, "In Your Pocket." Whatever the style, Dave Spinner's excellent CD, "Oceans & Islands" is an exemplary showcase of jazz vocabulary from a bandleader as musically insightful as he is astute.

"Food To The Hungry" by Gene Strandquist (Country Artist from Alberta, Canada)

Defying easy categorization is Gene Strandquist's ace-in-the-hole on the Canadian singer-songwriter's fine debut CD, "Food To The Hungry." Instead of letting his song craft be defined by adherence to a particular style or genre, Strandquist simply goes for the hook, a strategy that works very well. Indeed, there's a distinct honky tonk feel to 2 songs, the ramblin' CD-opener, "Rangeland Ride," and the hook-laden "I Wasn't Looking" while the closing track, "Distant Sorrow," is an affecting piano ballad of no fixed persuasion. Title song, "Food To The Hungry," with its minor-key resolve, is equally catchy with a Carlos Santana like melody and florid guitar runs while "Standing At My Father's Door" has a wonderful post-Beatles vibe reminiscent of Ringo's early solo hits. If that weren't enough, "Misery" features a positively Dylan-esque like vocal delivery and "Alida" is a very pretty love song. This disc runs full force with seven songs embedded with seven melodic triumphs. File Gene Strandquist's "Food to the Hungry" CD in pop-rock, but know that it's much more than that.

"Scratch" by Bela Lugosi (Classical Artist from California(CA))

Stunning and spectacular makes the headlines for Bela Lugosi and their spectacular classical album, "Scratch." Don't let the band name, Bela Lugosi of horror film fame, scare you off, as some of this twenty seven-track disc is dedicated to paying homage to highly acclaimed classical composers such as Bach, Chopin, Brahms, and Mendellsohn. Created by Misha Bodnar, an accomplished cellist, this group rises up to incredible heights with their fantastic abilities. The entire collection of pieces is performed by magnificent and breathtaking strings that are strong and brilliant yet dazzle with emotions pouring from the heart. Listeners will feel the fire and fury of the strings on "Sabre Dance" and "Bach Invention in F Major," as this intense, fevered precision is no easy task. Also interwoven into the disc are clever vocal clips of Béla Lugosi himself on "Béla Lugosi in One Body Two Many" and "Béla Lugosi in The Body Snatchers" which emanates an air of mysterious qualities. "Honky Tonk Heaven" by Robin Lee Sinclair (Country Artist from New South Wales, Australia)

Robin Lee Sinclair may be Australian, but don't think he doesn't know a little something about American country music. Boasting 14 tracks abounding in country and country-rock smarts and know-how, Sinclair's CD, "Honky Tonk Heaven," is packed with tuneful and well executed songs showcasing his own and his band's, range and presence. The title track, "Honky Tonk Heaven," makes for a perfect CD-opener, with Sinclair's intense lead vocals soaring on a chorus that is both immediate and timeless. "Country Member" takes it uptown with a fine quick-step shuffle tailor-made for the dance floor, while "Remember Me" is moving and urgent, with shades of Elvis in Sinclair's dramatic reading. Other highlights include "Shannon," an up-tempo number with a splendid banjo backing, "Bouncin' Back," featuring a Jerry Lee Lewis-like piano-pounding-rhythm, and the boppin', 50's-inspired "And Then There Was You." Throughout, though, Robin Lee Sinclair proves himself a polished and seasoned vocalist on his effortlessly pleasing CD, "Honky Tonk Heaven."

"Never Said Good Bye" by Robert R. Patterson (Folk/Blues Artist from Illinois(IL))

Robert R. Patterson's second CD, "Never Said Good Bye" finds the guitarist / singer-songwriter furthering an exploration of his unique songcraft in ways as original and inventive as they are satisfying. A virtuoso on guitar, Patterson turns his acoustic and electric guitars loose over 12 songs that delve into classical, folk, and blues influences which, nevertheless, blend seamlessly into a whole of potent musicality. Where the song "Five Dollar Mohawk" is a blues-rock workout with slashing slide licks, the hauntingly beautiful "Smile Little One" features acoustic picking as delicate as it is pristine. "Little Spanish Evening," an acoustic solo instrumental, is a veritable wordless lullaby, while the CD opener and titled track, "Never Said Good Bye" is an oddly effective composition that's both exotic and eccentric. Much of the album finds Patterson in elemental mode, his lone guitar and rich voice breathing life into songs of loss and redemption, but on the ballad, "Life," a deep and sonorous cello accompaniment raises the performance to solemnity. As second releases go, Robert R Patterson's "Never Said Good Bye" CD is a fine sophomore album, building on the echoes of his first, while pointing forward with his evolving potential.

"Mark on the Stage" by Graham Gorrie (Rock Artist from Australia)

Graham Gorrie refuses to be bound by convention or stylistic constraints on his fine debut CD, "Mark on the Stage," instead carving out a rock 'n' roll path that emphasizes smart songcraft . Like his brilliant fellow Aussie singer-songwriter, Paul Kelly, Gorrie's originality is borne out over 13 rock / folk-rock songs that are as meaningful as they are satisfying. Songs like CD-opener, "Closing My Eyes," with its alternating guitar and harmonica fills or "Hard to Do," with its effective female-lead interpolations, each display a deft touch for finding the right textural context for the composition at hand. On "Red Wine Dreams" Gorrie offers up a rare jazz-like ambience while the socially-conscious "Resistance," with its engaging melody, calls to mind yet another Australian act, the great Midnight Oil. Throughout the album, though, Gorrie's songs resonate with conviction and true-believer passion, making "Mark on the Stage" not only a particularly noteworthy debut CD, but one that will likely be a jumping-off point for an artist of considerable talent.

"Someday" by Caroline Gilmour (Soft Rock Artist from The United Kingdom)

Caroline Gilmour's debut CD, "Someday," is simply an excellent example of female-fronted heartland rock played with fire, conviction, and the kind of passion that keeps rock 'n' roll vital. Both in her voice and straight-up rock style, Gilmour, despite being Scottish, actually recalls such North American artists as Melissa Etheridge, Heart, and Sheryl Crow (among others) over 12 songs imbued with Classic Rock-like melody and drive. The album opener, "Be With Me Tonight," for instance, gets things off to a rocking start with a power-chord-backed chorus worthy of any of Pat Benatar's best hits, while the infectious "After All This Time" has a hook that's tailor made for adult oriented rock play lists. Drawn from personal experience, the singer-songwriter's taut and emotionally charged songs such as "I Thank You" and "Before I Can Fall," also find their mark, due particularly to a powerful backing band at one with the material and the vision behind it. While she may be a newcomer to the scene, don't expect Caroline Gilmour's terrific CD to go unnoticed; "Someday" is here for fans of Classic Rock as polished as it is raw and untamed.

"Down the Mountain" by Mark Lennon (Rock Artist from Los Angeles, California(CA))

Mark Lennon's third CD, "Down the Mountain," finds the terrific LA-based singer-songwriter continuing his musical journey down that Americana trail blazed by the likes of legends such as Ryan Adams, Gene Clark, and Gram Parsons. And like those notable forerunners, Lennon's ease and naturalness with the country-tinged rock style is as pure as it is noteworthy. With vocal inflections that sound clear-as-mountain-stream authentic, Lennon's songs of love's travails and the struggle to find meaning in mixed-up times, really strike home on tunes such as "What I Could Be With You," "Broken," and the wonderful "My Hometown," a track that recalls American Beauty-era Grateful Dead. As accessible and tuneful as all the songs are, though, Lennon's duet with Simone Stevens on "Wildside" has a fragile beauty that goes beyond questions of style or genre, invoking instead the notion that great music knows no such boundaries. With a multi-textured Americana / Country Rock ensemble providing the perfect backdrop for "Down the Mountain," Mark Lennon's latest CD is a triumph of style and delivery.

"Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" by Michael Arrington (Country Artist from Tennessee(TN))

Whereas Michael Arrington's outstanding debut CD was a straight-up country effort showcasing the refined singer's well-crafted songs and the classic guitar-piano-steel accessories of the album's country roots, on "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" Arrington and his crack Nashville sidemen deliver a more diverse collection of mainly traditional songs that more than ably cover the rest of Nashville's grand legacy. With Arrington stepping back from the mic to concentrate on his ample sax talents, this 10-song CD of mostly instrumental covers recalls no less a figure than Arrington's childhood inspiration, the renowned saxophonist and bandleader Boots Randolph. With excellent renditions of such traditional nuggets as "Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms," and "Rocky Top," and the jazz ambience of "Misty," "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" has a throwback vibe that verily channels a bygone era. In that same vein, Arrington and band tackle standards such as "Summertime" and "Tennessee Waltz" with the kind of detail and precision one would expect from seasoned vets, while a vocal take of Merle Haggard's "Big City" has all the bounce and swing of the original. Michael Arrington and his fine "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" CD is testament to the depths of talent this man has to offer.
